Five elderly ladies puttering along at 22 kph
| Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 KPH.Says he to himself: “This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!”
So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back…wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him “Officer, I don’t understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?” “Ma’am,” the officer replies, “you weren’t speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers.” “Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly … Twenty-two kilometers an hour!” … the old woman says a bit proudly. The Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that 22 is the highway number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grins and thanks the officer for pointing out her error. “But before I let you go, Ma’am, I have to ask…Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken, and they haven’t made a peep this whole time,” the officer asks. “Oh, they’ll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Highway 189.” |

Murray receives the Website Trophy for best website in District 9980!

For the second year running, Keith picks up the prize for best photograph at the District 9980 conference awards.

As host club of the Area 5 secondary school speech competition, Cromwell Club was recently joined by representatives of two local college debating teams.

And the winner of the contest everyone wants to win… Denis picks up the funny man for a slice of the jackpot. That’s an excellent cheesy grin, Denis, well done.

Rotary in our community
Reminder: Book Sale, Friday 3, Saturday 4, Sunday 5 June … the coutdown is on.
Venue: Old Post Office (ex furniture store side)
At our last committee meeting it was decided to ask all members to collect at least one carton of books from friends, neighbours etc for the Book Sale. This would give us at least 58 additional boxes. Please drop these books off to Sharon (Goldfields School) or Charlie Hughes, or bring along to the May 9, 16, 15 meetings.
Thanks to the members who have offered their help to date. We will aim to collect the books from the Race Course at 5pm this Tuesday 10th (weather permitting). The current weather forecast shows that Tuesday is the best option, over the next few days. If it is raining this will be postponed.
Please look out for the roster at our meeting tonight. We still need a lot of help during the book sale. I know there are committee members who will be available for more than one session, and members who are prepared to “fill the gaps”.
I have the key to the venue – the ex furniture store in the old Post Office. Book sorting will commence from Thursday (12th). Please let me know if you can help with this, and I will arrange for you to collect the key.
The venue is great – with easy access from both sides of the Mall (although the public will access from the middle of the mall.
Do you have a trestle table we could borrow? We need tables urgently during book sorting.
Also … please save your supermarket bags. We need lots of these during the sale. I will collect these on club nights.
We have also decided to run a Raffle during the sale, to raise funds for Christchurch. All members are asked to donate 1-2 non perishable food items for a Hamper. Bring your Hamper items for the Christchurch Earthqauke fundraising raffle, which will held in conjunction with the book fair, to the next club night.
Thanks for your support, Sharon
Lance Wensley, who is the Rotary Friendship Exchange contact for District 9980, advises:
Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) visits are being arranged between District 9830 in Tasmania and our District. A Tasmania group of about 12 people will visit our district in February/March 2012. Our district is invited to send a group to D9830 in March/April 2012, which is a fantastic time to visit Tasmania.
RFE is an activity of Rotary International under which Rotarians and their families can carry out reciprocal visits and home stay with Rotarians and their families in other countries. The purpose is to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace through people to people contacts across national boundaries.
If you are interested in participating in the return visit to Tasmania, please contact: Lance Wensley RFE D9980 Contact. lance Phone 03 6863266
The Sun in highlights
Look what the sun’s been up to over the past year. This spectacular highlight reel of videos shot by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) commemorates the one year anniversary of when NASA revealed the first images taken by the spacecraft.
Over the past year, the sun has gone from one of the most docile periods in many years to the point where you might say that all hell is breaking loose.
Says NASA:
The Solar Dynamics Observatory mission has returned unprecedented images of solar flares, eruptions of prominences, and the early stages of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). In this video are some of the most beautiful, interesting, and mesmerizing events seen by SDO during its first year.
